Alewood

A small community nestled into the northern foothills of Sundland's central mountains, Alewood is named after its unique dry forests which ferment their own sap into a delightful drink. During the monsoon season, and again in spring when the ice caps from the Worldtooth Mountains melt and flow out of Labyrinth towards the sea, the trunks swell with liquid as the trees store water for the long dry summer. Some magical property in the runoff waters causes a reaction in a symbiotic fungus living within the trees, and the watery sap begins to ferment, creating a liquid very similar to birch beer. The brewers of Alewood take this process many steps farther, turning the naturally alcoholic alewood sap into a wide assortment of beverages of varying potencies, mixing it with grains to make a true beer or whiskey, or with grapes to create a sharp but sweet kind of wine.

Once the possibilities of the Alewood trees were realized, the folk of Sunderwyl (particularly those with strong Dwarven roots) immediately demanded that they be protected and cultivated, and the town of Alewood was formed to ensure that the Republic could continue to benefit from the trees’ gifts. When the Trans-Sundland Railway was being planned out, a unanimous vote made Alewood one of its stops, and the town has boomed with a constant influx of tourists, alchemists, and horticulturists ever since.
