Two thousand years ago, a Vauldan petty queen sent off her ambitious third son to make a fortune for himself and her kingdom (and get him out of a brewing succession crisis). Eusebius founded a colony on an isle in the nearby Archipelago, which thrived for three generations before some dreadful calamity struck, causing the people to slay one another and feast on the remains, before devouring their own living flesh. Those who venture to the isle now find voracious and twisted beasts haunting the ruins, but the cursed magics lingering in the area have a profitable side-effect: the beasts all contain grains of Tenebrite lodged in their hearts and brains, and the herbs that grow here are rich in dark energies.
