Wearing a suit of armor grants you a bonus to your maximum Hit Points while you are wearing it, depending on how protective it is.
You cannot cast Spells or perform rituals while wearing Light, Medium, or Heavy Armor.
To count as a “suit” of armor and grant the listed benefits, the armor must cover at least four of the following areas:
- Upper torso (bottom of the ribcage up to the top of the shoulders)
- Lower torso (bottom of the ribcage down to the hips; sufficiently large kidney belts count)
- Upper Arms (shoulder joint down to the elbow; pauldrons do not count on their own unless they extend down to just above the elbow)
- Lower Arms (elbow down to the hand, preferably including the hand, but full-forearm bracers still count)
- Upper Legs (from just below the hip joint down to the knee; tassets or war-skirts may not always provide enough coverage on their own, so bring them to weapons check to make sure your kit suffices)
- Lower legs (from the knee down to just above the ankle)
If you wear asymmetric armor (i.e. only one arm that has armor), each limb counts as half of an area, and you round down to find out whether you have a full suit of armor for the purposes of adding to your Hit Points.
Each armor type (Light Armor, Medium Armor, and Heavy Armor) also counts as the lighter types of armor for the purposes of covering these areas. Mixing types of armor on different locations only grants you the benefits of the highest one that covers the required number of areas.
- Example 1: If you wear Heavy Armor on three of the listed areas, and Light Armor on the other three, you gain the benefits of Light Armor, as the Heavy Armor doesn’t cover enough area to count as a full suit but still counts as Light Armor to grant you the benefits of a Light Armor suit.
- Example 2: If you wear Heavy Armor on two of the listed areas, Medium Armor on two others, and Light Armor on the remaining two, you gain the benefits of Medium Armor. The Heavy Armor also counts as Medium Armor, giving you an effective coverage of 4 pieces of Medium Armor, which meets the requirements for gaining its benefits.
